Custom Poster Printing

Posters are full-colour prints on paper or thin vinyl, hung on walls, windows and frames to announce an event, promote a sale or decorate a space. Stores, schools, event organisers, clinics and offices order them as single copies for a frame or in runs for a campaign across locations. Send the size, paper, quantity and your artwork, and the quote confirms the stocks available.

How posters are printed and how to choose paper and size

Single posters and short runs are printed on a wide-format inkjet printer from a roll, so any size up to the roll width is possible and each copy can be different. Larger quantities of one design run on a press on sheet stock, which suits a campaign across many locations. Either way the file is proofed at the final size before anything prints, so type, margins and bleed are checked on screen first and a misplaced date is caught before it is on paper.

Match the size to the frame or the wall. 18 x 24 in and 24 x 36 in fit common frames and easels; 27 x 40 in is the movie-poster size for lobby frames; 11 x 17 in is a notice-board poster. Matte paper hides glare under lights and is easy to photograph; satin or photo paper deepens colour for photographs and artwork; adhesive vinyl sticks to a window or a wall without tape. Tell us where the poster hangs and we suggest a stock.

Posters hang with frames, clips, poster strips, hook-and-loop tabs or removable putty, or go into a snap frame or a light box at a store. Adhesive vinyl posters apply straight to glass and peel off later. For a trade show or a science fair, ask for the poster mounted to foam board so it stands on an easel. A rolled poster should be unrolled and flattened under weight for a day before it is framed.

Paper posters are an indoor product: sun fades inks over months and damp curls paper, so a window poster facing the street should be on vinyl or laminated. A laminate also protects posters that are handled, wiped or reused each season. Stored flat and dry, a printed poster keeps its colour for years, and because the proof was approved at full size, a reprint from the same file matches the original run.

Options for poster printing

Paper stock

Matte paper for notices and anything photographed under lights; satin or photo paper for photographs and rich colour; adhesive vinyl for posters that go straight onto glass or a wall.

Laminate

A gloss or matte laminate protects posters that are handled, wiped or reused each season, and keeps a window poster from curling in damp weather.

Mounting

Have the poster mounted to foam board so it stands on an easel or hangs flat for a research presentation, a trade show or a lobby display.

Packing

Single posters and small runs ship rolled in a tube; larger quantities ship flat in cartons. Say if the posters must arrive flat for framing.

How ordering works: quote, digital proof, print, then delivery to the USA or Canada. Nothing prints until you approve the proof.

FAQ

Poster Printing: questions answered

Still unsure? Ask a printing specialist.

What sizes can posters be printed in?
Standard sizes are 11 x 17 in, 18 x 24 in, 24 x 36 in, 27 x 40 in and 36 x 48 in, and wide-format rolls allow custom sizes up to the roll width. Give the size of your frame or wall space and the poster is trimmed to it.
Which paper is used for poster printing?
Heavyweight matte paper for notices and signs, satin or photo paper for photographs and artwork, and adhesive vinyl for windows and walls. The quote confirms the stocks on hand for your size and quantity.
Can I order a single poster online?
Yes. Single posters and short runs are printed on a wide-format printer, so one copy is a normal order. Enter the quantity on the quote form and the quote shows the price for that number.
What file should I send for poster printing?
A PDF, TIFF or high-resolution JPEG at the final size, ideally 150 to 300 dpi, with text as outlines or fonts embedded. If the file is smaller, say so and the proof shows how it looks at full size before printing.
Can a poster go on a window?
Yes, on adhesive vinyl, which applies to glass and peels off later, or on laminated paper behind the glass in a frame. Paper alone curls in damp and fades in sun, so ask for vinyl or a laminate on any window poster.
