Custom Car Magnets

Car magnets are printed magnetic sheets, commonly 30 mil thick with rounded corners, that carry a logo, phone number and service list on the door or tailgate of a vehicle and lift off in seconds. Contractors, cleaners, real estate agents, delivery drivers and anyone who works from a personal or leased vehicle order them in pairs for the two front doors. Send the size, the quantity, a photo of the door panel and your artwork, and the quote confirms the magnet thickness.

How car magnets are made, sized and kept on the vehicle

A car magnet is a flexible magnetic sheet with a white vinyl face bonded to it. The artwork is printed on the face with UV-resistant inks, a clear laminate goes over the print to stop stone chips and washing from scuffing it, and the sheet is cut to size with rounded corners so the edges do not lift or catch. Magnets ship flat, usually as a pair for the two front doors, with instructions for cleaning the panel and placing the sign.

Measure the flat part of the door below the window and above any body line or moulding, then size the magnet to sit inside that flat area with a margin: 12 x 18 in fits most car doors, 12 x 24 in or 18 x 24 in fits truck and van doors, and 24 x 24 in suits a tailgate. Keep the message to a logo, a service line and a phone number in large type that reads from the car behind at a stop light.

Place the magnet on a clean, dry, flat steel panel, laying it down from one edge rather than dropping it on, so there are no air pockets. Avoid curved panels, plastic bumpers, aluminum body panels and areas over body filler, where a magnet cannot grip; test the spot with a fridge magnet first. Remove the sign before an automatic car wash, and lift it off every few days to wipe both surfaces so moisture does not mark the paint under it.

A laminated 30 mil magnet holds on a flat, clean steel panel at highway speeds, and the print keeps its colour through years of sun and road grime. The magnet weakens if it is stored rolled or stacked print-to-magnet, so keep spares flat with the magnetic sides apart or stuck to a steel cabinet. If the paint under the sign is new or recently repainted, let it cure fully before applying a magnet, and wax the panel only after the sign is off.

Options for car magnets

Corners and shape

Rounded corners are standard because they resist lifting at speed and in a wash. A contour cut, such as a logo outline or a shield, is an option when the design is not a rectangle.

Laminate

Gloss laminate gives a painted look that matches most vehicle finishes; matte laminate reduces reflections for photographs and for signs read in low sun.

Pairs and mirrored sets

Door magnets are usually ordered in pairs. If the design has an arrow or a photo that should face forward on both sides, ask for a mirrored set and both layouts are proofed.

Size to the panel

Send a photo of the door with the flat area measured, and the magnet is sized to sit inside it with a margin, clear of body lines, handles and mouldings.

How ordering works: quote, digital proof, print, then delivery to the USA or Canada. Nothing prints until you approve the proof.

FAQ

Car Magnets: questions answered

Still unsure? Ask a printing specialist.

What should I put on a car magnet for my business?
A logo, one line saying what you do and a phone number, all in large type that reads from the car behind. Add a website only if it is short. Leave the lists of services for a flyer; the sign is read in a few seconds.
Will a car magnet fall off on the highway?
On a flat, clean steel panel a 30 mil laminated magnet with rounded corners holds at highway speeds. Lifting happens on curved panels, dirty or waxed paint, and when a corner is left up, so apply it flat and check it before a long drive.
Will a car magnet damage my paint?
Not on cured factory paint if it is removed regularly and both surfaces are wiped. Problems come from trapped grit and moisture under a magnet left on for months, and from applying to fresh paint. Lift it off every few days and before a wash.
What size car magnet do I need for a door?
12 x 18 in fits most car doors, 12 x 24 in or 18 x 24 in fits truck and van doors, and 24 x 24 in suits a tailgate. Measure the flat area below the window and above the body line and send a photo; the magnet is sized to sit inside it.
Do car magnets stick to every vehicle?
Only to flat steel. Many trucks, hoods and some doors are aluminum, and bumpers are plastic, so test the spot with a fridge magnet before ordering. For aluminum panels and windows, a vinyl decal or a perforated rear-window graphic is the alternative.
