Mesh Banners

A mesh banner is printed on a woven, PVC-coated polyester fabric with small holes between the threads, so wind and some light pass through instead of pulling on the fence or the fixings. Contractors, sports clubs, schools and festival organisers use them on chain-link fences, scaffolding and railings where a solid vinyl banner would act as a sail. Send the fence length, the banner height and your artwork and you receive a quote and a digital proof at final size before printing.

Why fences get mesh instead of vinyl

Mesh banner material is a polyester weave coated in PVC, printed with the same large-format printers and UV-resistant inks as vinyl banners. The difference is the holes: about a third of the surface is open, so wind, rain and some light pass through. That is what makes it the standard choice for construction fences, where a solid banner on chain link can bend posts or bring the fence down in a storm.

Choose the height from the fence: a standard 6 ft temporary fence panel takes a banner about 5 to 6 ft tall, and lower privacy fences take 3 or 4 ft. For width, measure the run you want covered and decide whether one message repeats along it or one long design spans it. Because the weave softens fine detail, keep type bold and larger than you would on vinyl; the proof at final size shows exactly how small text will read.

Installation is by zip ties or bungee cords through the grommets to the fence wire, working from one end and keeping the top edge straight. Fix every grommet; a mesh banner tied only at the corners flaps and wears at the hem. On scaffolding, tie to the standards and ledgers rather than the debris netting so the banner does not pull the netting loose.

Mesh is a working material: it is expected to stay on a site for the life of the project in sun, rain and wind, and it fades gradually rather than failing. Webbing hems and heavier grommet spacing extend that. When the job ends, cut the ties, roll the banner loosely and it can go on the next fence.

Options for mesh banners

Grommet spacing

Fence banners take more fixings than wall banners because every tie carries wind load. Grommets every 2 ft along all four edges is the usual spacing on a fence; ask for every 12 in on a long run that faces open ground.

Webbing-reinforced hems

A strip of polyester webbing sewn into the hem spreads the load between grommets so a gust does not tear one out. It is worth asking for on any mesh banner longer than 8 ft or on a site that stays up for months.

Pole pockets

For a mesh banner that hangs between posts rather than on a fence, pole pockets at the top and bottom take a pipe or conduit that keeps the fabric flat. Give us the pipe diameter and the pocket is sized to it.

Panels for long runs

A fence that runs 100 ft is easier to install as several panels than as one roll. We split the artwork at sensible points, keep the logo clear of the joins and proof each panel at its own final size.

How ordering works: quote, digital proof, print, then delivery to the USA or Canada. Nothing prints until you approve the proof.

FAQ

Mesh Banners: questions answered

Still unsure? Ask a printing specialist.

What is the difference between a mesh banner and a vinyl banner?
Vinyl is a solid sheet with a brighter, sharper print; mesh is a weave with small holes that let wind through. Use vinyl on walls, stages and anywhere sheltered, and mesh on fences, scaffolding and open sites where wind load matters more than fine detail.
Can a mesh banner be printed on both sides?
No. The weave is open, so a print on one side shows faintly reversed on the other and a second print would show through. For a fence seen from both sides, order two single-sided banners and hang them back to back.
How much wind goes through a mesh banner?
The common fence mesh is roughly a third open, so about that share of the wind passes through and the rest still loads the fence. That is far less pull than solid vinyl, but a long mesh banner still needs a tie through every grommet.
How do I attach a mesh banner to a chain-link fence?
Zip ties or bungee cords through each grommet to the fence wire, starting at the top corners and working along the top edge, then the bottom. Keep it taut but not stretched; bungees give in gusts and are easier on the grommets than rigid ties.
Which material is mesh banner printed on?
A PVC-coated polyester mesh, usually around 8 oz per square yard for fences, printed with UV-resistant inks and finished with hemmed edges and grommets. Your quote states the weight, and the artwork is proofed at final size before printing.
