Step and Repeat Backdrops

A step and repeat backdrop is a large banner with two or more logos repeated in a staggered pattern, hung behind a red carpet, a photo wall or a stage so every photo taken in front of it shows the sponsors. Event planners, galas, schools, sports clubs and companies use them at award nights, fundraisers, conferences and launch parties. Send the logos, the size of the wall you want and whether you need a stand, and you receive a quote with a digital proof at final size before printing.

What a step and repeat is, and how to size one

The name comes from the print layout: one logo, or a set of them, is stepped across the banner and repeated row after row, offset so the pattern does not form plain columns. The banner is printed on a matte material, because a gloss banner behind a camera flash throws a white hotspot onto every photo. Vinyl is hemmed with pole pockets for a stand; fabric is dye-sublimated, so the colour is in the fibre and the surface stays flat and glare-free.

Size depends on how many people stand in front of it. An 8 x 8 ft wall frames two or three adults with the logos visible around them; 8 x 10 ft handles a group of five or a team photo; 10 x 10 ft suits a stage. Logos are typically 8 to 12 in wide so they read in a cropped photo, with the row spacing set so a logo sits beside a face at head height, about 5 to 6 ft from the floor.

Setup takes two people: extend the bases, raise the uprights, slide the crossbar through the top pole pocket and lift it into the uprights, then pull the bottom pole pocket over the lower bar or weight it so the banner hangs flat. Place the backdrop with 3 to 4 ft of space in front so the subject is not in its shadow, and light it from the front and the sides rather than with on-camera flash alone.

A vinyl step and repeat is rolled print side out between events and stays clean and uncreased for years of galas; a fabric one is folded and can be steamed. Keep the logo files for the next event, since sponsors change and the grid is rebuilt from the same template. Each new version is proofed at final size so the logo sizes and the photo zone are checked before printing.

Options for step and repeat backdrops

Adjustable backdrop stand

A telescopic stand has two upright poles on weighted bases and a crossbar that extends from about 5 to 10 ft, so the same stand carries an 8 x 8 ft and an 8 x 10 ft banner. It packs into a carry bag with the banner.

Fabric for photography

A dye-sublimated polyester backdrop has no sheen at all and folds into a bag, which photographers prefer for flash. It hangs from the same stand with a pole pocket. Ask for fabric if the backdrop will travel to many events.

Logo layout

Logos are usually set in a diagonal stagger so at least one full logo appears next to every face in a photo. Send the logos as vector files and we build the grid, scaling each to a similar visual weight, and proof the whole wall at final size.

Wall and truss hanging

For a venue with a truss, a drape rail or a wall, order hems with grommets instead of pole pockets and hang the backdrop with ties or hooks. Tell us how it hangs and the finishing follows.

How ordering works: quote, digital proof, print, then delivery to the USA or Canada. Nothing prints until you approve the proof.

FAQ

Step and Repeat Backdrops: questions answered

Still unsure? Ask a printing specialist.

What does step and repeat mean?
It describes the layout: a logo is placed, then stepped across and down and repeated in a staggered grid until the banner is full. The result is a photo backdrop where a sponsor logo appears next to every person in the picture, which is why it is used at red carpets and press walls.
What size should a step and repeat backdrop be?
8 x 8 ft is the standard for two or three people at a photo wall; 8 x 10 ft gives room for a group of five or a wider shot; 10 x 10 ft suits a stage. Measure the space and the ceiling height, and remember the stand adds a few inches at the top.
Should the backdrop be matte or gloss?
Matte. A gloss surface reflects camera flash as a bright patch across the logos. Matte vinyl or dye-sublimated fabric gives an even surface that photographs cleanly.
Does a step and repeat banner come with a stand?
The stand is an option on the quote: an adjustable telescopic stand with two weighted bases, a crossbar and a carry bag. If you already own one, order the banner alone with pole pockets sized to your crossbar, or with grommets for a wall or truss.
How big should the logos be on a step and repeat?
Usually 8 to 12 in wide, arranged in a diagonal stagger with a gap about equal to a logo's height, so a full logo appears beside each face in a cropped photo. Send vector logos and the proof at final size shows the full grid before printing.
